We're All Mad Here!
Since it is the Oscars tonight, I thought I'd talk a little bit about costumes. Although I did not like the movie itself, I cannot deny that the costumes in Alice in Wonderland are amazing. Now you might think it could have been an easy job Colleen Atwood, costume designer, but it was not. In an interview with WWD she spilled all about her quest to create the characters' costumes for this crazy world. For Alice it might have seemed especially easy but considering the many size changes she encounters during her journey, Atwood had to create multiple dresses that avoided the typical "costumes-in-a-bag" look. When creating Alice's looks she stated “I didn’t want to convey anything other than that she was a girl who saw her life in a different way and was a bit freer in how she dressed and how she thought about her clothes.” When it came to the Mad Hatter she strived for a "playful but still traditional” look and said that “He’s a real person with a great amount of heart in the story, so to have him running around in something that distracted from that would have been a mistake,” Although Atwood tried to stray from a Halloween costume look, she may have had some influence over next Halloween, as she said “I’m sure this year’s costumes will be influenced by [the costumes in] this film.”
